It is my considered opinion that identitarianism is the rebirth of the ancestor cult in the modern world. There is an epochal shift going on right under our feet, and there are more of these archaic rebirths happening than just that. For now, we will focus on this one.
For archaic man, salvation was not individual but collective. His worship was above all familial worship; beyond that it was clannish; beyond that it was tribal; beyond that his religion was the state cult. Nowhere did he have a personal, direct, and individual relationship with the divine—it was always mediated through one or another group. The ultimate object of worship—the founder or high god—could only be approached through the line of ancestors. Everywhere you look, intermediaries.
This changed later, as it had to if this religion was to be overthrown. Man’s prosperity was no longer dependent on his ancestors smiling on him from beyond. His salvation was no longer dependent on his sons carrying forward the worship after he was gone. Now, his salvation depended upon himself alone. Man convinced himself that he had a direct and unmediated relationship with the high god, and could secure for himself salvation through that relationship. Sola fide is not an aberration or a heresy, but the very pith and marrow of this new way.1
Man’s orientation became rather more individual and private. A crime against the public—whether that public be the family, the clan, the tribe, or the state—was unthinkable to the archaic Aryan, because his salvation was bound up with the public. Post-pagan theologies make the group something secondary; man can seek his salvation independent of it. For the Aryan of 5,000 BCE, if he were exiled from his tribe, he no longer had a religion at all. Exile was the ultimate punishment, far worse than death.
Today we are in a similar position. True, some things have changed. The theology is, if not gone, sublimated in a secular way—identitarianism rather than ancestor worship. But the basic structure of the situation has not changed. If man does not seek his salvation in the group, he is doomed. It’s a simple choice, really: folkish or die.
The folkish sphere is the only group in existence today that knows how to bridle and hold off the grey goo that is liberalism, which threatens to absorb and sterilize all human groups on earth. Identitarianism is not enough. We alone hold the key to survival. Exile from us is as good as death.
